Description
This intricate band sampler is inspired by thse that were worked in the seventeenth century using Double running stitch. There was such an embroidery on the wall of the Principal of the Royal School of Needlework’s office which was framed with glass on both sides so the reverse could be admired as much as the front. This design incorporates small areas of Satin stitch too to provide blocks of colour. Double running stitch, also known as Holbein stitch, creates a flowing line on both back and front, but a similar effect can be achieved with Back stitch if the reverse is never to be revealed.
